I like making my own harness’ for car electronics projects. I’ve spent enough time upside down underneath a dashboard professionally to know that it’s best to minimize that. So I do as much as I can on the bench.
This is a simple one (it really isn’t even a “
harness”
)
, but
I normally go overkill with projects
and this
is no different. I’m just hard wiring my dash cam into the Alltrack
. I could just get
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
, and
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
, find switched power and a ground, run the wire and be done with it. However,
I want to add a switch so I turn the camera circuit on even if the car is off. I also always use a relay, so that means I need to do a bit more work.
First I disassembled a USB
charger I had laying around, snapped off the contacts and soldiered in wires. Then
I drilled out the front enough to bring out two
wires and fit a piece of heat shrink.
I t
ested it
and wired it to the relay. I will also be using fuse taps and diodes for the constant and switched 12v wires that will be used
to trigger the relay. Then I trimmed out the red wire as I’m not using the negative trigger, loomed it up, and trimmed up the wires for install.
So now all I have to do is grab my constant 12v and ground sources, then find switched and constant fuses to tap for triggers, wire in diodes and my switch (which I think I will mount upside down in the plastic foot well “ceiling”). Diodes will prevent current from flowing back into the cars circuits if I accidentally have both trigger wires activated at the same time.
Anyway, just sharing because I like working with electronics and I can’t talk to anyone else about it. So i’m pitching it out here as we’re a creative, project based, bunch.

That bench!
Too clean much organization!

There’s so much to be said for clean, tidy wiring that’s properly done, especially when modifying or adding something. this looks snappy!

Looks nice. I’m ordering all the parts for my bussman sub panel today. Its going to be a doosy! I’ll post pics

Thanks. I’m a bit over the top with it, but if something goes wrong it’s so nice to have each accessory on it’s own managed circuit. That way you’re not searching through a half dozen splices of the cigarette lighter when you have finally overloaded.

Full disclosure, that workbench/whole room is a disaster at the moment. So many large car parts, a mountain bike and workstation for it , and a bunch of stuff we have staged for work we’re doing on the house along with all of my tools/tables .
When my wife and the baby go to her sisters for the weekend or something I like to get not sober and fully clean and reorganize.

We’ve been in our house for 2 years, and my garage & toolbench has still not been fully cleaned and organized...
Three kids will do that to you. Maybe Mrs. addiction and I can attack it when they’re gone with her folks for the week before school.

You ever use any of those tools ? I can’t fathom having a flat surface not covered in tools and junk and water bottle and shit. I'm impressed.

Hah it’s a mess right now, as that room is storing a bunch of car parts and furniture because we’re having work done on the house. Normally, if I’m working on something I clean everything up and put it all back when I’m done for the day. I have other benches for stuff I need to leave out.
I like to keep the main one clear so I can walk in hands full and dump out a new project. Then I have the screen and keyboard right there to look stuff up/order parts/watch DIY vids...

Nice. Thanks for a detailed explanation of what you’re doing. What’s the coil of alligator clips in the second pic for? I’m thinking o’scope but usually don’t use
alligator clips with those.
Do you really need diodes? If you have both the ignition + on and the manual switch on, I wouldn’t think anything is going to happen to the car electronics.
Analogy might be if you have one of those battery keeper things plugged into your 12v socket to keep alive
your radio settings when you disconnect your car battery. If
you reconnect your car battery and turn the ignition on but don’t unplug the battery keeper, nothing will happen.

Those are just leads I have made to connect things while I’m testing on the bench. No, I don’ t need diodes, but I made a mistake with the GEM module (or whatever it’s called) on the R anger at one time which caused my wipers to be on all the time and behave wildly. So I’m just putting them in as an extra precaution .

“Can’t hurt, might help.” - this is how doctors decide whether to go ahead with a particular procedure or therapy.
Do you know for sure that backfeeding voltage caused the Ranger issue? I know a little about electronics but am not a EE.

YesNo. T he problem stopped when I wired in the diodes on the Ford, haha. I also know a little about electronics, but am not anywhere close to an EE.
I also cut out the the initial connections I made, before I added the diodes. So there was the major diagnostic error. Now I’ll never know if it was the diodes or if I fucked up the wiring officially. To your first point, it’s more likely the wiring was fucked to begin with.

I like the computer idea!
I spent the day in my garage building the frame for a new welding table. Currently the table I have 18"x 24" and it makes doing anything difficult. I constantly struggle with how to best utilize the space. Seeing your bench made me realize I have a long way to go. I need enough space for a welding table, a drill press, bench grinder and vise, compressor, two tool chests and the other 1000 tools I have. I also need to leave enough room in the garage to pull a car in to work on. And the garage is only 10' x 20' so it's tight, to say the least.

Yea I’ve crammed that bench, a reloading bench, drill press, grinder, router table and 1/3 of my other wood tools into a 14x14

I am still dreaming of my 4 bay garage with a tall enough door for my boat, a bay with a lift a m etal shop, and one for storage.
